Part 1: How Europa Gymnastics grew from local roots to national impact

By Lauren Benham | 29 May 2026

Europa Gymnastics isn’t just your typical gym. It’s a story of passion, growth, and a strong sense of community. From a small family-run club in 1992 to a nationally recognised name, Europa’s journey has been shaped by both challenges and long-term vision.

Chris and Emma Sheriff, who now lead the club, have built on the foundations set by Emma’s parents, continuing a legacy that has always been about more than just gymnastics.

In this series, we explore the decisions, mindset, and approaches that have driven their growth. In Part 1, we focus on the club’s early vision and team development – insights that can support any club looking to grow sustainably.

A strong start with a clear vision

Europa began with a simple but powerful idea: create something that went beyond gymnastics alone.

Emma reflects on those early days:

“It was 1992 when my parents started the business… the building wasn’t fit for purpose, but they saw potential. And that’s where it all started.”

What began as a gymnastics space quickly evolved into something more flexible. The club adapted to the needs of its community, offering different pathways for young people to stay involved and develop their strengths.

“My mum would spot talent in kids who weren’t the best at gymnastics and get them into something else… and that’s how we grew.”

Takeaway #1: Start with a clear vision, but stay adaptable. The clubs that grow are often the ones that respond to the needs of their community, not just their original plan.

Building a team that feels like a community

As Europa grew, one of the biggest challenges was building the right team.

For Chris and Emma, it wasn’t just about skills, it was about finding people who shared their values and cared about the club in the same way they did.

“We needed people who cared as much as we did… we built a team that felt like family.”

That mindset shaped how they developed their team. Rather than relying solely on external recruitment, they invested in developing people from within.

Their Young Leaders Academy became a key part of this, giving young people the opportunity to grow into coaching and leadership roles within the club.

“A lot of our coaches have come from within… we’ve always looked to build up our own team.”

This created a culture where people felt invested, supported, and part of something bigger.

Takeaway #2: Invest in your people early. When your team grows with your club, you build stronger culture, better retention, and a more consistent experience for your members.

Creating a club that can grow sustainably

As the club expanded, Europa reached a point where what worked in the early days needed to evolve.

With more members, sessions, and activity, clarity and consistency became increasingly important.

Rather than adding more layers of complexity, Chris and Emma focused on simplifying how the club operated, creating a more joined-up experience for both their team and their families.

With the support of the Thrive4 platform, they’ve been able to bring more structure and visibility to how things run, helping the club grow in a way that feels manageable and sustainable.

This shift has allowed their team to spend more time focusing on coaching, development, and supporting their gymnasts, rather than trying to keep up with increasing demands.

Takeaway #3: As your club grows, simplicity becomes more valuable. Creating clarity in how things run helps your team stay focused on delivering a great experience.

Making decisions that support long-term growth

One of the key themes in Europa’s journey is intentional decision-making.

Rather than reacting to growth, they’ve consistently looked ahead, asking what the club needs next and how they can support that in a sustainable way.

That includes:

  • Creating clear pathways for gymnasts
  • Developing their team from within
  • Building a structure that supports consistency as they scale

Having the right support in place, including tools like the Thrive4 platform, has helped them do this with greater confidence, without losing sight of what matters most.

Takeaway #4: Growth works best when it’s intentional. Small, well-considered decisions over time create a strong foundation for the future.

Looking ahead

Europa’s journey shows that sustainable growth isn’t about doing everything at once. It’s about building strong foundations, investing in your people, and staying connected to your community.

In Part 2, we’ll explore how Europa built on these foundations to strengthen engagement, navigate seasonal challenges, and continue growing their club
